Questions and Answers
- I need a new computer/keyboard/mouse/monitor/computer-thingie. Can you help me out? faq id: 15
With every computer system, ISPS provisions a keyboard, mouse, standard monitor, and speakers (in many cases, the speakers are built into the system). We strive to maintain equipment in the best possible condition throughout its service life, which is normally about four years.
On occasion, equipment will fail after the manufacturer warranty has expired or will not meet the needs of a particular user; e.g. some users prefer to use a trackball rather than a standard mouse.
Under these circumstances, it is the responsibility of the department to replace the item. ISPS is happy to advise on the most appropriate replacement item and assist with procurement.
- My department needs to purchase a new (non-replacement) computer system. Can you give us a recommendation for what to purchase? faq id: 16
Yes! ISPS carefully monitors and tests new pieces of hardware as they become available from the manufacturer, so that we have a standard configuration ready for users when they have a need to add systems to their environment.

ISPS works closely with the staff at University Computers to help ensure that ISPS-certified hardware configurations are kept on hand. This helps avoid the need for long lead-time between when a need for a new system is identified and when it can be deployed to the end user.

To maximize consistancy across our support environment and ensure that systems perform as trouble-free as possible, ISPS creates and maintains standard "system images" for each hardware variant we support. This allows us to rapidly configure a new computer when it is purchased and assure the user that what they are receiving meets ISPS' high standards for performance and reliability.
